What is Periodontology?

Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of gum diseases. Diseases that affect the gums and the supporting bone tissues around the teeth can eventually lead to tooth loss. Periodontal treatment aims to stop the progression of these diseases, ensuring that teeth remain healthy in the mouth.

What Are Gum Diseases?

  • Gingivitis (Gum Inflammation): The earliest stage of gum disease. It is usually characterized by redness, swelling, and bleeding of the gums. Gingivitis can be treated with regular dental cleanings and proper oral care.

  • Periodontitis: If gingivitis is left untreated, it can cause inflammation and damage to the bone tissue that supports the teeth. This can lead to severe gum disease, which may result in tooth loss.

  • Gum Recession: The gums recede, exposing the roots of the teeth. Gum recession can lead to sensitivity and aesthetic issues.

Symptoms of Gum Diseases

  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing

  • Swollen, red, or tender gums

  • Gums pulling away from the teeth or receding

  • Loose or shifting teeth

  • Persistent bad breath (halitosis)

Causes of Gum Diseases

  • Plaque Buildup: Bacterial plaque on the teeth is the primary cause of gum inflammation. Regular brushing and flossing help prevent plaque buildup.

  • Poor Oral Hygiene: Insufficient oral care can lead to the development of gum diseases.

  • Genetic Factors: Some people may be genetically predisposed to gum diseases.

  • Smoking: Smoking contributes to the onset of gum diseases and complicates the treatment process.

  • Stress, Hormonal Changes, and Other Health Issues: Pregnancy, stress, and certain health conditions can negatively affect gum health.

Periodontal Treatment Methods

  • Scaling and Root Planing: The removal of plaque and tartar from below the gumline is a fundamental treatment to prevent gum inflammation and recession.

  • Root Surface Smoothing: Cleaning and smoothing the root surfaces of the teeth help the gum tissue reattach to the tooth roots.

  • Gum Surgery: In cases of advanced periodontitis, reconstructive gum surgeries or bone grafting may be necessary.

  • Laser Treatment: Laser technology is used in the treatment of gum diseases to help heal inflamed tissues more quickly and precisely.

  • Gum Recession Treatment: Surgical or laser treatments are used to protect the exposed roots and restore the aesthetics of the gums in cases of gum recession.

Treatment Process

  1. Examination and Diagnosis: Gum diseases are diagnosed through examination and X-rays by the dentist.

  2. Treatment Planning: Based on the extent of gum damage, a personalized treatment plan is developed. Scaling, root planing, and, if necessary, surgical treatments are planned.

  3. Recovery and Follow-up: After treatment, regular dental check-ups and proper oral care help maintain the health of the gums.

Advantages of Periodontal Treatment

  • Preserving Gum Health: Gum inflammation and infections are treated, ensuring the long-term health of the teeth.

  • Preventing Tooth Loss: Gum diseases, if untreated, can lead to tooth loss. Early intervention prevents this issue.

  • Improving Bad Breath and Aesthetics: Bad breath and aesthetic problems caused by gum diseases are eliminated.

Why Should You Get Periodontal Treatment?

If left untreated, gum diseases can lead to tooth loss and jawbone erosion. With periodontal treatment, you can maintain your gum health and achieve a healthy oral structure without losing your teeth.
