What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that corrects teeth misalignments, jaw irregularities, and malocclusion (improper bite). Orthodontic treatment aims to provide a healthier oral structure and properly aligned teeth, both aesthetically and functionally.
When is Orthodontic Treatment Applied?
-
Crooked, overlapping, or misaligned teeth
-
Malocclusion of the upper and lower jaws (open bite, deep bite, crossbite)
-
Gaps between teeth
-
Retracted or protruding jawbone
-
Chewing or speech difficulties due to misalignment of the jaw and teeth
Orthodontic Treatment Methods
-
Metal Braces: Traditional orthodontic treatment using metal braces, which are fixed to the teeth and gradually align them with wires. It provides a durable and effective treatment.
-
Ceramic Braces: An alternative to metal braces, ceramic braces are closer to the natural color of the teeth, making them ideal for patients concerned about aesthetics.
-
Lingual Braces: Braces placed on the back surfaces of the teeth, making them invisible from the outside, offering great aesthetic advantages.
-
Clear Aligners (Invisalign): For patients who do not want to use traditional braces, clear aligners offer a nearly invisible treatment option, gradually aligning the teeth. This method is both comfortable and aesthetic.
Treatment Process
-
Examination and Planning: Before starting orthodontic treatment, a detailed evaluation of the teeth and jaw structure is performed. X-rays and photographs are taken, and a personalized treatment plan is created.
-
Treatment Application: Depending on the chosen method, braces are fixed to the teeth, or clear aligners are custom-made for the patient.
-
Regular Checkups: Regular orthodontic checkups are done throughout the treatment, and necessary adjustments are made.
-
Post-Treatment: After treatment, a retention appliance (retainer) is used to maintain the new position of the teeth.
Orthodontic Treatment Duration
The duration of orthodontic treatment varies depending on the patient's dental structure and the type of treatment. In general, the teeth are aligned over a period of 12 to 24 months. In mild cases, the treatment time may be shorter.
Who is Orthodontic Treatment Suitable For?
Orthodontic treatment can be applied to both children and adults. Proper alignment of the teeth and jaw is important not only for aesthetics but also for oral health. Misaligned teeth can make cleaning difficult, leading to tooth decay and gum disease. Therefore, orthodontic treatment provides both aesthetic and functional benefits.
Advantages of Orthodontic Treatment
-
A More Aesthetic Smile: Properly aligned teeth result in a more aesthetic and harmonious smile.
-
Improved Chewing and Speech: Correcting bite and alignment issues improves chewing and speech functions.
-
Better Oral Health: Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
